I have black mold. Is it toxic or dangerous?

There is a toxic and dangerous form of black mold called stachybotrys. It is very uncommon to find under normal living conditions, therefore your black mold is probably not this form of mold. The only way to know for sure is to perform a swab test on a sample of the mold. Stachybotrys grows only when water has been standing in an area for an extended period of time and when humidity is over 90%. If this does not describe the environment of your home, then you probably do not need to be concerned about mold toxicity.

Do you provide air testing for mold?

Yes. We use Pro-Lab, an independent third-party laboratory, to assess our air sample collections. The cost of an air sample test for a one-story home is $225.00. The cost of an air sample test for a two-story home is $300.00

Is mold affecting my health?

That depends. If you have visible signs of mold growth or if you can smell a musty, moldy smell and you are experiencing repiratory ailments or allergy symptoms, then mold may very well be the source of your health problems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says, “In 2004 the Institute of Medicine found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis {a type of pneumonia} in individuals susceptible to that condition. The IOM also found suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children.” If you have unexplained health problems, but none of the previously mentioned signs of mold, then mold is probably not the source of your symptoms.

Are there laws regarding mold or the mold remediation process?

At this point, there are no federal laws regarding mold. Some states have enacted legislation related to mold at the state level, but Wisconsin is not one of those states.
